Milan Special School District talks code of conduct changes, more in board meeting
MILAN, Tenn. — The Milan Special School District held their board meeting Monday night.
On the agenda were some policy changes to their code of conduct, in addition to student discrimination, harassment, bullying, cyber-bullying and intimidation.
Using racial slurs is a level four misbehavior. Also slurs related to ability, appearance, culture, gender, home language, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or social class will not be tolerated.
We spoke to one mother who addressed the school board earlier this year over claims of racism and bullying towards her child.

“The outcome is that they should feel safe. They should be able to work in an environment and be in an environment where it’s free from distractions that’s related to racial slurs or intimidation or anything of that sort. And i hope this gives students the courage to speak up and speak out and let someone know that this is unacceptable behavior,” said Shereka Phinnessee, parent.
Phinnessee says she would like to continue working with the school system to make a positive change as it relates to students. She says there’s always work to be done.
