With firework sales now legal in Jackson, vendors set out for booming profits
JACKSON, Tenn. — For the first time in many years, fireworks are now legal to sell and shoot off in Jackson, and local vendors are fired up for the season.
As Independence Day quickly approaches vendors are ready to help residents in Jackson light up the sky.
“[We’re] Very excited that Jackson is allowing the sale and shooting of fireworks this year,” said Drew Young, tent manager for Kid Dynamite Fireworks.
For many years, an ordinance has made it illegal to use or sell fireworks within city limits. That is no longer the case as seasonal sales and use is now permitted.
If you drive around Jackson, you won’t miss the large pop-up tents, with close to a dozen stationed around the city selling fireworks.
The Jackson Fire Department said residents have been waiting for this.
“This has been requested for some time. It prevents our citizens from having to travel outside of the city limits to go get fireworks and come back and use them,” said Jackson Fire Marshal LaTrell Billingsley.
You’ll be able to purchase fireworks from vendors from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. until July 5. As for shooting them off, you can do so from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. However, on July 4, there is an extended period until 12:30 a.m. the next day, July 5.
Vendors have been selling for nearly a week, and say sales have been successful.
“Our big seller would be our 500 gram cakes and 200 gram cakes,” said Young.
Young encourages those with small children to look at Snow Wands.
“They are a sparkler that does not–it’s a cool burn so you don’t get burnt if you get touched,” said Young.
Party poppers, Black Snakes and cone fountains are all safe for younger kids.
“We also have a lot of noiseless fireworks. So if you live in a neighborhood with a veteran that may appreciate the less noise,” said Young.
Many vendors are offering a wide variety of options and mega deals.
Kid Dynamite is celebrating the season with a Safety Day on Sunday, June 29 at all of their nine locations in West Tennessee, including two in Jackson.
“Between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., we will be doing giveaways every 20 minutes of smaller fireworks, but at 6 p.m. we are actually going to be giving away this big godfather that you see behind me,” said Young.
It is also extremely important to follow firework safety rules, including never using fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol and keeping a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher close in case of a fire. For more information on rules and regulations, and additional safety tips, click here.
