BUI enforcement expected to increase this weekend
MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Many people will be getting out on the water this weekend and the TWRA wants to remind the public of a few things.
Operation Dry Water was started by the NASBLA in 2009. In the past, it has been successful in raising awareness regarding the dangers of boating under the influence.
Amy Snider-Spencer, with TWRA, tells us more about what it is.
“You are going to see a heightened awareness from our agency on the water this weekend,” Snider-Spencer said. “We’re looking for those boaters that could be under the influence. We’re also looking for boaters that are not obeying the navigational rules and regulations of the water.”
It is no coincidence that this is usually launched around the July 4 holiday. Snider-Spencer tells us what is expected out on the water this time of year.
“Everybody wants to go out and have a good time, but we just want people to do it safely, and to follow the laws in Tennessee,” Snider-Spender said.
Boating under the influence is a serious matter. It needs to be taken just as seriously as when you are behind the wheel of a car. Not just this weekend, but year-round.
“Currently, we have over 30 BUI’s across the state,” said Snider-Spencer. “One thing we want people to be aware of is alcohol is the leading contributing factor in recreational boater deaths. So we see these go hand in hand.”
Penalties for boating under the influence can include fines, jail, bound impoundment, or losing your boat operating privileges.
