Tips on how to maintain your sobriety while still enjoying celebrations

JACKSON, Tenn. — Wedding season is here, and for many, weddings are synonymous with dancing, food and open bars.

However, for those who may be living with alcohol use disorder and on a recovery journey, attending events where there is often pressure to drink as a way to celebrate can be challenging and open them to risk of relapse.

Dr. Sarah Church, founder and executive director of Wholeview Wellness in New York City, shares some tips on how to enjoy these celebrations while supporting recovery.

“We encourage people to bring a, a sober buddy along with them. Somebody that understands what they’re trying to do and can support them. If they don’t have somebody who’s sober. Trying to pick somebody that’s not going to be drinking heavily that they can kind of spend time with is another option,” said Dr. Church.

For those struggling with AUD, it is important to be aware that evidence-based treatment options exist.

Options, such as vivitrol, that combine medication with counseling can help reduce heavy drinking and support long-term recovery.
