Customer says victim of deadly shooting was ‘a regular at the store’
JACKSON, Tenn. — Police are continuing to investigate a deadly Sunday night shooting at a gas station in north Jackson.
Workers tried to get back to business Monday at the Marathon gas station on North Highland Avenue, one day after police said someone shot and killed a man at the store.
“It’s very surprising because normally here it’s pretty quiet,” Earl Jones, a customer, said.
Jones said he stops every morning to fill up his lawnmowers. “I’ve been stopping here for about seven years, never experienced any trouble at all,” he said.
Jackson police said the shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. Sunday. Officers and EMS responded. A customer said the victim was apparently a regular at the store.
“It’s absolutely crazy,” Jesse Vaughn, a customer, said. “I mean, I’ve lived here in this area for a long time.”
The owner showed WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News surveillance video of the shooting. He said he turned it over to police, but declined to allow us to film it.
“It makes you think twice about going to the gas station without some protection or something like that,” Vaughn said.
The surveillance video appeared to show the victim also may have been armed with a gun.
Jones said he plans to be more vigilant. “You know it’s sad that we live in that type of society, but yeah, you have to keep your guards up at all times,” he said.
The shooting is still under investigation. Police did not release any information about a possible suspect.
