Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society at critical capacity after recent rescues

DYERSBURG, Tenn. — One local animal shelter is looking to the community for help in relieving its overcapacity situation.

The Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society has been operating overcapacity since its recent rescue of 36 dogs, pushing the shelter to more than double its capacity.

Now, the shelter is even more strained as another animal neglect case arose.

On July 16, their team responded to a situation where seven dogs were living in a camper in extremely poor conditions, and one was found deceased.

“Our building was actually set to house 43 animals. That’s our big runs. We have had to bring in smaller kennels and kind of stack on top of each other in the back in our quarantine area,” said Hayley Box, director of Dyersburg-Dyer County Humane Society.

In a recent Facebook post, staff members state they are “drowning and need rescue assistance now.” Although the shelter is overcapacity, Box says they have no intention of completely closing intake.

“With us taking in this many dogs, we have to rely on our community for donations. We are completely nonprofit, and we run off of donations, so we have to keep bringing in dogs, and we have to have donations from the community,” said Box.

The humane society is asking for pedigree dog food, cleaning supplies, bleach, dog bowls and more. While a few dogs have been adopted, a lot more need forever homes.

“You know, we have lots of different breeds here. We have small dogs, big dogs, puppies, older dogs. You know, anything that anybody’s looking for, we pretty much have here. I just encourage everybody to come out and adopt and at least see what we’ve got, and if they don’t want to adopt, they can foster for a short term, it helps get the dogs out, it helps them get socialized,” said Box.

The humane society is currently housing 77 dogs and is encouraging volunteers to lend a hand. To learn more about where to donate, adopt, or foster a furry friend, click here.
