Local expert shares pool, swimming safety reminders
JACKSON, Tenn. — Summer is in full effect. For those soaking up the fun, we have a few ways to help keep you safe while you’re spending time in the pool.
As warmer temps rise, many are spending more time in the pool. We take a visit to Blue Hawaiian Pools on North Star Drive to gain insight on what to keep in mind to when you’re enjoying time in the water.
“Number one, most pools around here are required to have a fence. It’s state requirement that any pool that’s able to pass inspection is going to have to have a pool alarm,” said Hunter Sherrod, manager at Blue Hawaiian Pool.
Public pools require permits, inspections and you have to adhere to specific design and operational standards like water quality and safety equipment.
For residential pools, especially those deeper than 24 in., it’s required to have barriers and alarms in place.
“This here is Protect-A-Child Pool Fence company out of Memphis, and these are nice because they’re pretty affordable so when your kid is able to swim we can remove them,” said Sherrod.
Having the proper pool protection can make all the difference in creating a life-saving moment. Here what you can expect with a pool alarm purchase.
“If a kid falls in, it will sound the alarm. If you’re standing across the bypass here you can probably hear it,” said Sherrod.
Hunter tells us he has a 2-year-old and gives us his thoughts on younger swimmers who are in the water without parental supervision.
“Personally, they need to be 10 to 12 years old, and have 2 to 3 years of swimming experience. That would be my preference on that,” said Sherrod.
It’s recommended that residential pools in neighborhoods that prefer diving construct an 8-foot deep pool for swimming. Non-divers will typically shallow it up to 5.5-feet.
“I put in several pools a year and we’re offering pergolas now, as well as outdoor kitchens. We just try to be a one-stop shop here,” said Sherrod.
You can find all essential pool protection online from notable retailers or visit Blue Hawaiian Pools here in the Hub City.
