UPDATE: Woman charged after man hit with car in north Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. — The woman behind the wheel of a car Jackson police say hit a man on Monday made her first court appearance Wednesday.

Emily Stedman, 27, is charged with DUI and vehicular assault after police say the car she was driving ran off the road and hit a man Monday afternoon on West University Parkway, sending him to the hospital.

The man was airlifted to a Memphis hospital with multiple broken bones. We are told he remains in serious condition.

Police say Stedman smelled of alcohol and failed a field sobriety test.

“Her eyes were glossy, and while speaking with her she had slurred speech,” City Court Judge Blake Anderson read in court. “When asked if she had been drinking she said no. If asked if she had taken any medication, she said yes.”

According to the police report, when the officer approached the car, Stedman was rapidly drinking water and smoking cigarettes.

Officers with the Jackson Police Department could be seen Wednesday morning at the intersection where it happened.

Tire marks, debris and markings in the road tell the story of what happened Monday afternoon.

“They say they could smell alcohol coming from her person,” Judge Anderson said.

Police say she admitted to driving her 2003 Nissan Murano at the time of the accident. Police say she drove onto the sidewalk, hitting the victim before hitting multiple signs and a utility box.

Police say they performed multiple field sobriety tests. They say Stedman did poorly on each one.

Stedman remains behind bars in lieu of $50,000 bond.
