Expert raises awareness for rising lung disease, symptoms to look out for

Studies are showing that lung disease cases are on the rise and many people may have it without knowing.

In fact, thousands of Americans are living with progressive lung disease that is often mistaken for asthma, COPD, or bronchitis.

August 4 is world NTM day. This stands for Nontuberculous Mycobacteria.

It is a health threat that is rapidly growing, however, most people have not heard of it. Amy Leitman is a spokesperson for NTMIR and tells us the symptoms we should look out for.

“The most commonly reported symptoms are fatigue, cough, and shortness of breath. Others are night sweats, low grade fever, some weight loss, but it’s really that sort of persistent cough that patients have a lot of problems with,” said Leitman.

This specific type of lung disease can go undiagnosed for years causing serious issues.
