RIFA hosts Pack the Bus throughout Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn.—One organization collects donations to stop hunger for local students.

The annual RIFA Pack the Bus event took place Saturday throughout Jackson.

Donations could be dropped at multiple businesses including Kroger on University and Stonebrook Place, Sam’s Club and both Walmart North and South Highland locations.

The charitable organization collects ready-made or easy to prepare food items like microwave popcorn, Pop-Tarts®, oatmeal, soups, macaroni & cheese cups and more.

The event is one of the largest providers for the Snack Backpack Ministry which works to provide weekend meals for elementary children during the school year.

“It’s a means to help children that are in home facing food insecurity, to feed them over the weekend. As you know in Jackson-Madison County School all the children receive free breakfast and lunch regardless of their income, so that feeds children breakfast and lunch through the week,” said Denice Walton, Director of Development for RIFA.

Many children rely on school lunches daily and these backpacks help to fill in the gaps to fight weekend hunger.

A snack backpack provides a single child with six meals and two snacks.
