Most of the scams we warn you of are simple calls and emails trying to trick you. This one in particular can be a little scary.

Toddnetta Trice, with the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South, tells us what it is.

“Scammers are now sending threatening emails claiming that they are watching you and demand money,” Trice said. “Usually it is cryptocurrency to pretty [much] keep you quiet and to avoid any type of harm.”

It can be easy to trust that this threat is real with all of the information the scammers have. However, it is easier than you may think for them to get these details.

“Always know that it is public record,” said Trice. “So people are always like, ‘how do they get my information? Where are they getting it from?’ It is public record and anyone can go through the State of Tennessee to look up some of that property information.”

The threats that the scammers send may make you think you have to respond. Trice tells us this is not the case.

“Don’t respond, don’t click any links, or send any money. We always tell people to do not engage. The more you engage, the more likely you will be scammed,” Trice said.

Many local, state, and national agencies have sent warnings about this particular scam. And the BBB has been getting reports in our area.

It is always important to block the emails if you receive one of these scams. Also, reporting it can be a big help.
