FHU Theatre invites audiences to ‘pick a side’ in a playful battle of wits, romance in ‘She Stoops to Conquer’
PRESS RELEASE FROM FREED-HARDEMAN UNIVERSITY:
HENDERSON, Tennessee — (Aug. 12, 2025) — The Freed-Hardeman University Theatre Program kicks off the 2025-26 season with a fresh and dynamic take on Oliver Goldsmith’s 18th century comedy “She Stoops to Conquer,” directed by Nate Cass, an FHU alumnus. The production will run Thursday, Aug. 21, through Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, in the Black Box Theatre. Tickets can be purchased online at fhutickets.com.
Set in a world of opposing values, mistaken identities and sharply dressed contradictions, “She Stoops to Conquer” explores what happens when love, class and confidence collide. The story centers on Charles Marlow—a gentleman who stumbles over his own manners among women of his class but transforms into a bold flirt around commoners. To win her suitor’s true affection, Miss Kate Hardcastle must navigate assumptions, expectations and the fine art of being herself.
Visually and thematically, the show is built on contrasts. “The world of the Hardcastles and the Marlowes are opposite in every way,” Cass said. “Even the stage lighting and audience seating mirrors that divide. We want the audience to feel like they’ve chosen a side when they select a seat!”
In addition to its clever dialogue and romantic misadventures, the production reflects storytelling that is rich in character, concept and connection. “At its core,” Cass added, “this show is about reconciling contradictions. It’s a comedy with depth, heart and just enough confusion to keep things interesting.”
Featuring a talented cast and creative team made up of mostly alumni, “She Stoops to Conquer” is a theatrical experience designed to both entertain and inspire. Members of the cast include Drew Bramblett, Jordan Deck, Collett Heenan, Mariah Kerr, Luke Noles, Cathy D. Powell, Kevin Record, Olivia Semore, Charlie Stone, MK Stone and Seth Wilson.
