Expert discusses importance of dental checkups, cavity prevention in kids

JACKSON, Tenn. — Every year, emergency dental care leads to more than 34 million hours of missed school.

As families prep for the new school year, back-to-school checklists often include doctor visits, supply runs, and sports physicals–but what about a dental checkup?

Expert from united healthcare discuss the importance of dental checkups, preventing cavities, and easing dental anxiety for kids.

Cavities remain the most common chronic condition among children – affecting more than half of kids ages 6 to 19. But with the right habits, tools, and access to care, these issues are largely preventable.

“But sometimes, choosing the good option versus those faster, easy ones can be difficult, especially if you have like a picky eater at home. A lot of times I recommend working with maybe a nutritionist or a dietary counselor. They can help with like meal planning or child-friendly recipes,” said Dr. Paul McConnell.

Regular dental checkups can help support a child’s ability to eat, speak and learn, and their social, emotional, and physical growth.
