AARP talks importance of Social Security
This year marks the 90th anniversary of Social Security, which has helped generations of Tennesseans retire with dignity after a lifetime of hard work.
AARP is honoring the legacy of Social Security, while fighting to protect and strengthen Social Security for older Americans today, and for our children and grandchildren.
More than one-in-five U.S. residents receive Social Security–that’s around 69 million Americans.
Social Security lifts 456,000 Tennesseans out of poverty every year.
Without Social Security, 46% of people over the age of 65 in Tennessee would live in poverty.
With Social Security, the poverty rate is 11.2.
