Sheila Marie Rinks
Born December 12, 1964, in Louisville, KY, Sheila grew up in a close-knit family and later moved with them to Jackson, TN, where she graduated with the Class of 1982 from Jackson Central Merry High School.
Sheila had a gentle spirit and a servant’s heart, qualities that guided her through a long and meaningful career at Selmer Elementary School. Caring for children was more than a job to her—it was her calling. She found joy in encouraging her students, celebrating their milestones, and being a steady, loving presence in their lives.
Those who knew Sheila will remember her for her warmth, her quiet strength, and the way she always put others before herself. She was happiest when surrounded by family, whether it was cheering for her children, cooking a favorite meal, or simply enjoying time together at home. Her love and laughter created a home filled with comfort and belonging.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Bates, Sr. and Anita Gathof Bates, and her brother, Ronnie Bates.
She leaves behind her devoted husband of 36 years, Randal “Randy” Rinks; her children, Zachary Rinks, Megan Rinks, and Matthew Rinks; her brother, Benjamin “BJ” Bates, Jr.; nieces and nephews, Callie Bates, Carley Bates, Amy Davis, Heather Bates, and Pamela Bates; and her sister-in-law, Pam Bates. Each of them will carry with them her love and the lessons she so quietly and beautifully taught by the way she lived.
A service to celebrate Sheila’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Sheila’s legacy is one of love, kindness, and devotion. Though she will be deeply missed, the countless lives she touched—both in her family and in her school community—will forever reflect her gentle and giving spirit.
