Madison Co. Commission meets to discuss lease agreement, other agenda items

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Madison County Commission met Monday and one of the items on the agenda was the approval of a purchase and lease agreement between Madison County and the Jackson-Madison County School System.

The agreement is pertaining to the property at 310 North Parkway, which is the current location of the school board.

The purchase and lease agreement says the school board will receive $2 million from the county and the board will move out of that building and into their new location in 2026.

Although the county owns the building at 310 North Parkway, officials said the charter grants the school system total control over the building for as long as it wanted it.

Since the school board is moving out of the building, Chairman Mike Bryant said the county is giving $2 million to the school system.

The agreement was passed by the commission Monday. Bryant said the county wanted to help the school board and voted to approve the purchase and lease agreement for two million dollars.

“It was just an opportunity for us to help the schools out. It was an opportunity for us to get a building that will give us room to grow and consolidate county offices in one place. You know, we’re looking at different things down the road that could work really good for the school system and the county,” said Bryant.

In addition to the purchase agreement, the commission also voted to eliminate the cell phone reimbursement policy for county employees beginning January 1.

Starting in the new year, employees currently receiving cell phone reimbursement for personal cell phones will now need to have one issued by the county if the individual needs one for their job.
