GALLERY: RIFA’s 2025 Canstruction event builds community bonds
JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson-based businesses, churches, schools, and organizations formed teams to showcase their talents by creating giant sculptures for RIFA’s 2025 Canstruction event.
“Jackson State Community College is a community college and we are here for the community, so the opportunity to work with RIFA and to contribute back to the community fits right into what we want to do for the community,” said Cathi Roberts, Success Coach, AMT Co-Op, JSCC.
There are loads of really cool sculptures. And get this — they’re entirely made out of unopened cans of food — even Superman.
Jackson State has been participating for the last four years. This year, students decided to bring the classic “Popeye” show to life.
“Popeye came out in 1929, so we used one thousand, nine hundred and twenty-nine cans to make this build,” said Karson McKee, AMT student at JSCC. “We actually build it at the school first to make sure that we have everything we need. And then we bring it here, break it down and we rebuild it here.”
So which structure is your favorite?
Thursday night, you can participate in the People’s Choice Award. Here’s how you vote: pull out your wallet or checkbook and donate to the team you like the most. If you don’t have any of that with you, you always have your phone, so you can scan the QR code right on the can and donate that way.
The Canstruction Gala is taking place 6-9:30 Thursday evening at the Carl Perkins Civic Center in downtown Jackson.
