First responders pay their respects during fallen firefighter memorial service in Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. — One annual training conference held a memorial service to honor fallen firefighters. First responders from across the state gathered to pay their respect.

As part of the 92nd annual First Responder Training Conference, a fallen firefighter memorial ceremony was held at First Cumberland Presbyterian church in Jackson. The service honored those who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2024.

“They gave their sacrifice. I mean, it’s the ultimate sacrifice that they gave their life doing their job for others, you know. So, that’s a big sacrifice. That’s why we don’t ever want to forget our brothers that lost their lives,” said Bolivar Fire Department Chief and TFA President Lynn Price.

Before modern alerts, telegraph systems were used to send coded messages. When a firefighter died in the line of duty, a series of five tolls was sounded.

The first responders that were honored included firefighter and EMT Robert Lewis Jr., Fire Chief Leland Alexander and “Fire Chief Joseph Lynn Murphy, Henderson County Volunteer Fire Department last alarm December 20, 2024,” said Price.

Attendees joined together in the firefighters prayer. The conference continues with 23 training opportunities designed to enhance their skills.

“This year right here is not just about firefighters. This right here is about first responders. This is the first time ever that TFA ever did a first responder conference,” said Price.

The three day conference brings together firefighters, emergency medical personnel, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, and more from across the state.

This year’s annual banquet is set to take place Saturday at 6 pm, located at the Double Tree Hotel in Jackson.
