St. Luke’s Episcopal Church host its Choral Evensong
JACKSON, Tenn.—A local church holds a very festive event to usher in fall.
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church hosted its Choral Evensong, or daily evening prayer at the church in downtown Jackson.
The event featured music about Michaelmas, the feast of Saint Michael and all angels. Michaelmas is celebrated around the world on September 29, marking the beginning of Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.
In scripture and the tradition of the church, St. Michael, the archangel is credited with defeating Satan and his host of fallen angels in the “Great War in Heaven” mentioned in the Book of Revelations.
The readings for the day are Bible stories of the angels, particularly of Saint Michael.
The hymns celebrate the ministry of the angels as recorded in scripture, and the motet is a paraphrase of the story of Michael in the Book of Revelations.
