GALLERY: New mural captures heart and history of Savannah
SAVANNAH, Tenn. — Artistry is taken to another level in one local town.
Community leaders and residents gathered in awe of a new mural in Savannah.
Located on Main Street near the Farmers Market, this giant work of art sits as an invitation to the city.
We spoke with local artist Derek Cortez, who tells us more on the design.
“The mural represents different forms of art, everything from an anime style of art to a very basic block style of art, and even to the letter; it’s almost an old school graffiti style of art,” Cortez said.
The mural took approximately 80 hours to complete. It features the history and uniqueness of the city encapsulated within each letter.
“Well I think it’s beautiful and I think it’s a good thing for the city,” said spectator Robert Conder.
The mural pays homage to the past and future, as well as annual festivals.
It has the annual Christmas on Main Street, the very first map of Savannah, and much more.
“I think it encompasses the city because it’s really showing the progression of the city,” Cortez said. “It’s really brightening up the city. It’s showing the world that the City of Savannah, Tennessee, that we’re a very welcoming place.”
This art project was made possible by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Council and collaborative efforts from the city and arts commission.
