Madison County remembers Commissioner Luther T. Mercer
JACKSON, Tenn. — One beloved Madison County Commissioner has passed away.
County Commissioner Luther T. Mercer died Thursday morning.
Commissioner Mercer served District 1 of Madison County.
He was dedicated to the county for many years and strived to help residents in anyway he could.
“We’re all saddened by the passing of Commissioner Mercer,” said Chairman Mike Taylor. “That goes without saying, but the community has lost a leader.”
Chairman Taylor also encourages the community to keep Commissioner Mercer’s family in your thoughts at this time.

Madison County, TN — October 9, 2025 — Today, Madison County mourns the passing of Commissioner Luther T. Mercer, a longtime public servant, community leader, and valued member of our County Commission.
Commissioner Mercer faithfully represented District 1 on the Madison County Commission for many years. His thoughtful leadership, steady presence, and commitment to civic responsibility earned him the respect of fellow commissioners, county staff, and citizens alike.
Commissioner Mercer’s influence extended beyond the Commission chamber. He was part of a family deeply woven into the fabric of Jackson and Madison County. The Mercer family’s long-standing dedication to service and compassion has made a lasting mark on our community. Commissioner Mercer embodied that tradition — leading with dignity, advocating with purpose, and always prioritizing the well-being of those he served.
As County Mayor, I worked with Commissioner Mercer to identify ways to serve the needs of his community. His insight, perspective, and steady commitment to progress for his constituents will be missed.
On behalf of all of Madison County Government, I extend our deepest condolences to the Mercer family, his friends, and the residents of District 1. We are grateful for his service and will honor his memory through continued dedication to the people of Madison County.

Tribute to Commissioner Luther T. Mercer
Commissioner Luther T. Mercer embodied what it means to be a dedicated public servant. He was a loving father, devoted husband, and a pillar of strength here in Madison County.
Commissioner Mercer began his service to our community as a Magistrate, first elected in 1977. Just one year later in 1978 he was elected as a County Commissioner, a role he faithfully held for 48 consecutive years. Throughout his tenure, he served on numerous committees, including two of the most critical: the Financial Management Committee and the Insurance Committee. His dedication and integrity earned him the respect of all who knew him.
What truly set Commissioner Mercer apart was his unwavering commitment to excellence and his ability to uplift those around him. A natural leader, he was always willing to lend a hand, share his knowledge, and guide others with kindness. He has been a constant source of support and inspiration to many.
Commissioner Mercer devoted his life to serving our community and improving the lives of countless individuals. He was not just a leader; he was a visionary, an advocate, and an inspiration. His passion for service and genuine care for people was evident in everything he did. His patience, kindness, and genuine interest in the growth and well-being of Madison County made him a beloved figure within Madison County.
He had a gift for bringing people together, bridging divides, and fostering purpose. Commissioner Mercer understood that real progress could only be achieved through collective effort.
Over the years, he spent countless hours listening to the concerns of his constituents, offering encouragement, and working diligently to find solutions. His compassion, empathy, and unwavering dedication touched countless lives, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
