What the Tech: App of the day ‘RoboForm’

If you’re still writing passwords on sticky notes or saving them in your phone’s notes app, there’s a safer, easier way. An app called RoboForm remembers them all for you and keeps them encrypted so hackers can’t get to them.

RoboForm is a password manager. Similar to OnePassword, LastPass, and Dashlane. You create one strong master password, and RoboForm remembers the rest. When you log in to websites or apps, RoboForm fills in your username and password automatically. It’s one of the oldest and most trusted password managers, launched back in 2000.

You can also use RoboForm to generate new, strong passwords that are nearly impossible to guess. Instead of “Summer2024,” it might create something like “9X$gH!2nM@W.” You’ll never need to type it again, because RoboForm handles it.

It works across devices, syncing your logins from computer to phone to tablet. The built-in Security Center analyzes all of your saved passwords and warns you about duplicates or weak ones. RoboForm also checks your passwords against the Have I Been Pwned database, so you’ll know if any of them have appeared in a data breach.

The free version works on one device. For a few dollars a month, you can sync across multiple devices and share logins securely with family members.

If you’ve been using the same password for every account, RoboForm is a simple step toward better cybersecurity. It takes a few minutes to set up, and once you do, you’ll never have to click “forgot password” again.
