Local businessman pleads guilty to 21 counts of tax evasion
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE TN DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE:
MADISON COUNTY BUSINESSMEN PLEAD TO TAX EVASION CHARGES
JACKSON — The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to Dwayne Tasil, the owner of Jackson Auto Sales, pleading guilty to multiple tax charges. The manager, Oliver Mayberry Jr., pleaded no contest to multiple tax charges.
This week, Judge Donald H. Allen accepted Tansil’s guilty plea to 21 misdemeanor charges of tax evasion and Mayberry’s no contest plea to various misdemeanor and felony tax charges. These charges stem from the business’ failure to remit collected sales tax on behalf of Jackson Auto located on North Highland Avenue. Tansil was sentenced to 11 months and 29 days supervised probation, and Mayberry was sentenced to four years, 11 months, and 29 days supervised probation. Tansil and Mayberry were ordered to pay restitution of $62,165.12.
“The taxes collected from customers are property of the state and local governments,” Revenue Commissioner David Gerregano said. “Customers have a right to know that the tax they pay will be remitted to the state and used for public good.”
The department pursued the criminal case in cooperation with District Attorney General Jody Pickens’ Office. Citizens who suspect violations of Tennessee’s revenue laws should call the toll-free tax fraud hotline at (800) FRAUDTX (372-8389).
