Holiday travel safety tips to know ahead peak traffic days
JACKSON, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security hosted its Thanksgiving travel briefing to address travel safety tips and the increase in law enforcement presence.

We have more on how to keep yourself safe traveling this Thanksgiving week.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after are the two busiest travel days of the year. Therefore, THP is expected to have troopers located every 20 miles on all interstates to watch for dangerous driving.

Colonel Matt Perry with THP asks travelers to make sure they are following basic driving safety protocols.
“I am asking every single driver to commit to three things: buckle up, slow down, and don’t drive distracted. Check your speed, put your phone away and always ensure every passenger is properly restrained,” said Col. Perry.
In 2024, it was reported that eight fatal crashes occurred in the state causing multiple fatalities during the holiday period.
Director of the Tennessee Highway Safety Office Buddy Lewis explains how to avoid a fatal crash.
“Set your GPS in advance, never text and drive, be patient. Heavy traffic can be frustrating, but it is important to remain calm and avoid aggressive driving behaviors like speeding or tailgating,” said Lewis.
To help families reach their destination the Tennessee Department of Transportation plans to halt roadwork to provide the most capacity on the roadways.
The THP encourages travelers to call star {*} 847 if you need highway assistance. This number will connect you to a THP dispatcher.
