JACKSON, Tenn.- In response to the recent rash of gun violence plaguing the Hub City, dozens of Jackson residents gathered in downtown to pray for peace across the city, Sunday. “One of the main things we wanted to get across today is that this is not an East Jackson problem. It is a Jackson problem,” said Pastor Russ Pflasterer of City Fellowship Baptist Church. After countless crime scenes, bullets fired down streets, near schools, and into homes and cars, residents told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News they are fed up with the gun violence. Church leaders from at least 6 different ministries gathered before concerned residents calling for action that could make a difference in the city. “Bullets don’t have names and they can be astray. We’re having drive by shootings and so people can ride down any street whether it’s in North Jackson, East Jackson or South Jackson the reality is that this is a community problem,” said Pastor Eric of Inspiring Ministries International. “People are hurting and it’s not an African American issue, it’s not a Caucasian issue, it’s a dangerous issue and it’s an issue we need to look at from every different front.” Local church leaders said they are working together for answers, looking for ways to resurrect hope in the city. They said peace for the city begins with prayer but it doesn’t stop there. Pastors said what Jackson needs most right now are volunteers who can mentor at-risk youths around the city and supporters to step up and help out the programs that are already in place to make a difference. “We could be the answer to these prayers that we are praying. If we want to see youths being mentored in this town, then we need to be ready to be the answer to that prayer,” said Pastor Pflasterer. “I pray these children are watching the news and recognizing that there are men and women and young adults, teenagers and college students out here that are willing to protect them,” said Pastor Newble. According to organizers, the ministries that took part in the Prayers for Peace in Jackson event include: City Fellowship Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, Inspiring Ministries International, Walnut Grove Baptist Church and Area Relief Ministries.
