Leaders from across West Tennessee gathered in remembrance of Weakley County Deputy Derrick Bonham who lost his life in the line of duty early Friday morning.
“Today, so many agencies and departments are gathered together under heartbreaking circumstances,” said Weakley Sheriff Terry McDade.
Deputy Bonham was one of the officers who responded to a report of a possible shots fired at a Days Inn in Martin.
At approximately 3:09 in the morning, deputies spotted a vehicle leaving a nearby gas station. Moments later, shots rang out leaving Deputy Bonham fighting for his life.
As the funeral quickly approached, Sheriff McDade stood before the community to honor the deputy’s memory and the legacy of service he left behind.
“Every shift he worked, every sacrifice he made was driven by his desire to not only this community, but the family he loved so deeply,” said Sheriff McDade.

The East Tennessee native served his country for seven years. Deputy Bonham went on to work for the Greenfield Police Department before transferring to the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office to serve for an additional two years.
He leaves behind a wife and three children.
“Derrick gave his life in the line of duty as a result of a senseless crime serving the people of Weakley County. He wore the badge with honor, courage, and unwavering commitment,” said Sheriff McDade.
Together, the Greenfield, Martin, and Milan Fire Departments raised their flag in a ceremonial salute to the fallen deputy. Flags remain at half staff in Greenfield and in the state capitol as a sign of mourning and respect.

As Deputy Bonham is laid to rest, Sheriff McDade asks the community to continue to lift his family, fellow deputies, and all first responders in your prayers.
To support Deputy Bonham’s family during this devastating time, a memorial fund has been established at Greenfield Banking Company.
