Brave souls take part in 15th annual Upper West TN Polar Plunge

UNION CITY, Tenn.—Participants brave the frigid water to raise money for those with disabilities.

The 15th annual Upper West Tennessee Polar Plunge took place today in Union City.

The event kicked off at 11 this morning at the Aloha Pools and Spas location at 1400 West Reelfoot Avenue.

Brave souls from across the area made a splash into the freezing cold water raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics.

Those who took part were required to raise a minimum of $75 to be eligible to participate and were also invited to dress in costume for the event.

Each participant receives a 2026 Polar Plunge medal, while some could also earn special swag for meeting certain fundraising goals.

“We’re really excited this year. We’ve already met our goal. As of right now we’re already at 23-thousand. However, there’s more money coming in so we’re going to announce that big total later. We’re excited about this, it’s our biggest fundraiser of the year that we have,” said Clinton Smith, Director of West Tennessee Special Olympics.

Any funds raised will benefit the more than 400 Special Olympic athletes in Carroll, Henry, Lake, Obion, and Weakley counties providing year-round training for Olympic sporting events for both children and adults. This year’s fundraising goal is $25,000.
