McKenzie Police Department discontinues routine vehicle unlock service
MCKENZIE, Tenn. — The McKenzie Police Department will stop providing free routine vehicle unlocks effective February 18, 2026, ending a service the department has offered for years.
The department said the decision is based on several factors, including increased safety risks and potential liability issues.
The department noted that modern vehicles contain complex electronics, airbags and sensitive components that create significant risk of damage during unlock attempts, and that potential airbag deployment could injure officers or cost thousands in repairs.
According to MPD, current repair costs range from $300 to $1,000 per incident, compared to $50 to $100 years ago when vehicles were simpler.
The department also cited Tennessee Code Annotated 62-11-113, which prohibits law enforcement from providing non-emergency unlock services as it takes business from licensed wrecker services. The department’s liability insurance does not specifically cover the unlock service.
Residents needing vehicle unlocks after February 18 should contact a wrecker service directly. D&D Wrecker Service can be reached at 731-352-0104.
The department says it will continue to provide emergency unlocks involving children or incapacitated persons locked in vehicles, and pets locked in vehicles during extreme weather conditions.
