Students Use The Holidays As Learning Opportunity

KENTON, Tenn. — The holidays are right around the corner and as a way to get kids into the spirit before they head off for a short break, students threw pumpkins down the hallway, just so they could make a bar graph for their math class. Other classes had tasks where they painted a pumpkin to look like a character they read from a book. The students did this to celebrate the season, by bringing unique activities to life in an educational way. All the assignments had a hands on activity which focused on the common core standards that they use throughout the year. Christy Griggs is a 4th grade teacher at the school and explained, “Hands on experiences are definitely important in a child’s life. We can tell them all day to know but when they experience and go ahead and it themselves then it imprints the information.” From throwing a pumpkin, dressing up like a pilgrim, painting pumpkins so they look like pigs, and even making butter from scratch, the activities were all focused to make sure the kids would never forget. “Throwing a pumpkin feels good…it was fun to throw a pumpkin… it was my first time doing it,” said 1st grade student, Albrey Sanderson.
