Gibson Electric scam warning: Member loses $280 to fake TVA/Gibson Electric phone number
GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — A Gibson Electric cooperative member lost $280 to a phone scammer after finding a fraudulent 1-888 number online that claimed to represent “TVA/Gibson Electric,” the cooperative said Wednesday.
The member found the number through an online search. When she called, the person who answered used the cooperative’s name and accepted a payment before she recognized the fraud. She reported the incident to Gibson Electric the same day.
The scammer used a fake phone number and website listing designed to appear official. The representative who answered identified the organization as “TVA/Gibson Electric” and collected a $280 payment from the member.
Gibson Electric said scammers are creating fake websites, phone numbers and listings that look legitimate. Gibson Electric is urging members to take the following precautions:
- Be cautious if someone pressures you to pay immediately.
- When in doubt, hang up and call the cooperative directly.
- Find verified contact information on your bill, in your cooperative magazine or at gibsoncoops.com/contact-us.
