The SOAR Advisor of the Year award recognizes exceptional advising professionals across Tennessee who demonstrate a sustained commitment to student success, innovation in advising practices, and a measurable impact on student achievement.

“This is a well-deserved award for an outstanding member of our college community,” said JSCC President Dr. Carol Rothstein. “Jason pours his heart into everything he does, ensuring students receive the best experience they can while attending Jackson State. I was excited to see him recognized as a finalist to both represent JSCC and the Western Region, but to take home the trophy just reinforces what we already knew – that Jason is the best of the best.”

Keeton, who has served at Jackson State since 2016, is widely recognized for his holistic and student-centered advising approach. In addition to teaching biology, he advises students across multiple pathways including General Studies, Pre-Health Professions, Biology, and Pre-Physical Therapy. His advising philosophy extends far beyond course scheduling, focusing on removing barriers, fostering belonging, and preparing students for long-term success.

“Jason’s impact is transformational. He meets students where they are, listens with intention, and helps them build a path forward—academically and personally,” said Dr. Ben Jeter, Dean of Math and Sciences at Jackson State Community College.

Keeton’s work reflects a deep commitment to meeting students’ needs both inside and outside the classroom. He actively connects students to resources such as financial assistance, food support, counseling, and transfer opportunities. His efforts include hosting scholarship workshops, organizing transfer events, and developing tools like pre-advising forms to better understand and serve students.

“His dedication goes beyond expectations. Jason doesn’t just advise students—he empowers them with the confidence and tools they need to succeed long after they leave Jackson State,” said Carrie Walker, Associate Professor of Agriculture.

A Phi Theta Kappa advisor and faculty fellow in the Dr. Mechel Camp Teaching and Learning Center, Keeton has also contributed to campus-wide initiatives that strengthen advising and student engagement. He regularly collaborates with faculty, staff, and student services to create a network of support for learners navigating higher education.

“Jason exemplifies what it means to be a student advocate. His ability to connect, guide, and inspire students is truly unmatched,” added Kim Warren-Cox, Professor of Communication.

The SOAR Advisor of the Year recognition highlights not only Keeton’s individual excellence, but also Jackson State Community College’s ongoing commitment to student success and high-impact advising.
