Children playing near creek discover skull; nearly 50 human bones uncovered, coroner says

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. (WHNS/Gray News) — South Carolina authorities are investigating after a group of children discovered skeletal remains while playing Sunday afternoon.

According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, the remains were found near a creek in the Homeland Park area when kids playing near the water discovered bones.

Detectives, forensic investigators and the coroner’s office were called to the scene to collect and investigate.

The county coroner said the children’s mother was the one who contacted the office, explaining a skull was found in the creek.

According to the coroner, the skull was confirmed to be human once examined at the scene.

Further digging also revealed about 45 to 50 other human bones, authorities said. The coroner explained that the bones don’t appear to be recent and could have possibly been there for more than a decade.

“I want to say that these remains are probably 10 plus years because of the roots that were around the bones and things like that,” the Anderson County coroner said. “But that’s still a guess.”

Authorities said the children discovered other bones earlier in the day, but thought they were deer bones.

Officials reported no fractures were found in the skull.

An anthropologist in Clemson will be joining the investigation Monday.
