Senator Marsha Blackburn got the full Northview STEM experience, thanks to a tour led by students and administrators.

Students were excited to show off this year’s latest designs including drones, mini-cars, and much more.

“The thing that makes us different is we involve the kids so much more in the decision making process. We’re award-driven, we’re goal-driven, a growth-driven school,” said Lynn Garner, principle of Northview Middle School.

“One of our sixth grade projects has crazy competition and bounce. It’s called balloon jousting,” said one Northview Middle School student.

In a presentation, students highlighted some of their projects effectively showcasing their public speaking skills.

“For me, to be able to see the great work we’re doing in Tennessee and how we’re preparing that workforce for the future and encouraging young people to be involved in stem. This is a wonderful opportunity,” said Sen. Blackburn.

Northview Middle School, located in Newbern, is a level 5 and a Tennessee Reward School.

Administrators say they encourage thinking outside the box, not only in instruction but administering grades too.

“To know that just because you’re from a small West Tennessee school doesn’t mean you can’t compete or excel in the larger world,” said Garner.

Garner says they’re goal is to prepare their students for success in the larger world.

Sen. Blackburn says she enjoys seeing the innovation taking place in education right now.
