Thrift stores offer affordable prom options across West Tennessee

JACKSON, Tenn. — As prom season approaches, many students are finding it difficult to find affordable options.

Prom night can come with a big price tag, from dresses and suits to shoes and accessories. But across West Tennessee, thrift and consignment stores are offering students a way to build a full look without breaking the bank.

At City Thrift in Jackson, employees say they’ve seen more shoppers hunting for formalwear as the dates get closer. Donations and deliveries come in regularly, so the selection can change day to day.

“We have all types of dress, short, long, different colors, for the guys we different types of blazers and ties and shoes,” said Sherry Thompson, shoe pricer at City Thrift.

If students find something they love but it doesn’t fit quite right, local alteration shops can help finish the look.

“Well they’ll come in with their garment, and usually try it on, and we pin it up to fit them, and they okay that alteration, and then we do it and hand it back to them,” said Carla Crowe, owner.

Alterations can be as simple as a hem, or as specific as taking in a waist or adjusting straps.

Students using alterations should prepare early as some shops get busier with longer turnaround times as prom weekends approach.
