Several weekend events coming to West Tennessee

JACKSON, Tenn. — Two annual events are happening this weekend.

The first is the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk in Jackson.

“People can expect just a celebration of life, community coming together, together is better, and us all fighting heart disease together is way better than alone,” Christy Futrell with the American Heart Association said.

The walk starts at 8 a.m. Saturday. They’ve also added a new competitive aspect to the walk, the Red Dress Dash 5K.

“For all of our Red Dress Dash 5K participants, you may wear a red dress if you would like, or you can wear your favorite walking/running clothes,” Futrell said.

Next is the Tina Turner Heritage Days in Brownsville. This event started back in 2012 and is held the fourth weekend of September each year.

Events kicked off Friday at 5:30 p.m. and then run all day Saturday.

If you’re in Bolivar this weekend, check out the Forest Festival, where they will celebrate all things forestry.

You can also participate in a prayer walk in the streets of Jackson.

“Our heart is just to come, as a church, to come out in our community and make ourselves known, and to love on our neighbors,” said Garry Martin, pastor of Jackson First Assembly.

The church and more than a dozen others will be praying for the Jackson community Saturday morning. They’ll meet in the Surplus Warehouse parking lot on Old Hickory Boulevard at 8:30 a.m., then go into nearby neighborhoods to pray.

“It’s not something we’re doing to be seen. We just want to go pray for some folks, and get to know people, love everybody, and let them know we are here for them,” Martin said.

Then after the prayers, there will be a cookout for everyone in the neighborhoods.

Organizers say both the Heart Walk and prayer walk will happen rain or shine.
