Fire Ignites Inside New Southern Hotel

JACKSON, Tenn. – A cooking fire is blamed for damage to at least three units inside the New Southern Hotel in downtown Jackson. Around 7:45 p.m., Saturday, Jackson firefighters rushed to the building along East Baltimore Street. Crews said sprinklers inside the unit extinguished the flames shortly before they arrived. However, the water caused damage to at least two other units. Power had to be shut off to the affected area for a short time. Residents in two the apartments were told they could not stay in their homes for the night. Firefighters said there were no reports of injuries.
