LEXINGTON, Tenn –There are at least a dozen reported deaths linked to this year’s flu. One local family said the virus almost killed their 1-year-old daughter. Zoe Turban is getting a mandatory checkup from her doctor after her mother said the toddler nearly died from the flu. “I didn’t have her vaccinated and within 18 hours the flu almost killed her,” Heather Turbin said about her daughter Zoe. Turbin said last week her daughter had a fever that lasted for several hours. After taking her to a local hospital she had a seizure. She was then airlifted to another hospital where she remained in Intensive Care for five days. “It was scary knowing that she had a seizure from the flu,” Tiffany Turbin, Zoe’s aunt, said. Local doctors said severe flu symptoms, some resulting in death, have become more common in West Tennessee this season. So far at least 12 people have died in state, with the first child death reported on Thursday. “Most people don’t take the flu that serious,” Peter Gardner, M.D of Physicians Quality Care, said. “They think it’s just a bit more severe than the common cold.” Turbin said she learned a hard lesson; but she’s glad it didn’t cost her, her daughter. Turbin says she now plans to have her daughter vaccinated.
