CARROLL COUNTY, Tenn. – Many Carroll County residents had an early morning wake up call after a train runs off the tracks along Highway 79 between Trezevant and McKenzie. “It woke me up and I didn’t know where it was coming from, and it was just a real loud roar and then all the sudden deathly quiet,” Charles Cook, who lives nearby the scene of the wreck, said. “(I) mainly wondered if the engineers were hurt or anything like that, but the guys from the railroad company told me they were fine,” Cook said. The derailment struck fear into those who live just feet away from the train tracks, wondering what could have been had the wreck happened just seconds later. “That’s the biggest fear of living here is the train derailing in the house,” neighbor Glenda Tinsley said. “I’m in the front bedroom, so I figured it could wind up in bed with me and that’s not a good thought,” neighbor Dorothy Higdon said. Officials with CSX Railroad said there were no spills or leaks and nobody was hurt. Local police said a Walmart semi-truck was hit by debris during the accident. The windshield was damaged, but the driver was okay “You can replace iron, but you cannot replace skin,” James Smith, who lives nearby, said. “Nobody got hurt. That’s the great thing about it.” Officials said the cause the train derailment is still under investigation.
