New Academic Academy to Open in August

JACKSON, Tenn.–Northeast Middle School will soon house a new Academic Academy. “It’s gonna be a challenge for our students,” Jeffery Head said, a school board member. “As a parent with a child in the public system, I think it’s important to have those options.” The academy, reserved for grades six through eight, should have between 200 and 250 students. Dr. Teresa Tritt will serve as principal for Northeast Middle and the Academic Academy. “We are going to be able to take our students who are already high achieving and build a program around their needs,” Tritt said. The district says academy students will have the opportunity to earn high school credit. “It offers some different challenges and opportunities for students to learn deeper,” Superintendent Dr. Verna Ruffin said. Students must apply for the program. “Those children who may not fall in that gifted and talented bracket or level, it allows those high achieving students to apply and possibly have those academic challenges,” Head said. The new academic academy opens in August of this year. The district announced the following dates regarding the new Academic Academy: February 24 – Parent and community forum at Thelma Barker Elementary at 6:00 p.m. February 25 – Parent and community forum at Isaac Lane Elementary at 6:00 p.m. February 27 – Parent and community forum at Denmark Elementary at 6:00 p.m. March 1 – Academic Academy Registration at North Side High School, South Campus Library from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. March 4 – Academic Academy Final Registration at the Educational Service Center at 310 North Parkway (School Board) from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
