NORTH JACKSON — Friday marked the start of Jackson’s “Do the Write Thing ” challenge. The program kicked off its seventh year at Northeast Middle School. The “Do the Write Thing” challenge program gives middle school students the opportunity to look at the impact of youth violence in their lives through classroom discussions A program director says teaching the students about ending violence now is a good age for them to understand what they should do to change our culture of violence. “They are old enough to understand the impact that violence has they old enough to have had some experiences and yet they’re not so old that they are set in their ways,” Lisa Cone, Director of Program Expansion, said. In six years, the Jackson-Madison County School System has had over 3,000 7th and 8th graders accept the challenge against youth violence by submitting writings.
