JACKSON, Tenn.–The former Madison County sheriff returned to court on Tuesday for two separate hearings. A judge set David Woolfork‘s trial date and dismissed a protection order filed against him. Special Judge Paul Summers dropped the order of protection filed against Woolfork. Attorney Mark Donahoe represents the retired sheriff. “We’ve said all along there wasn’t anything to the order of protection, that it was baseless to start with,” said Donahoe. In the second portion of the hearing, the judge set a trial date of May 27. Woolfork is charged with attempted aggravated sexual battery and domestic abuse. The charges stem from an alleged altercation with his former mistress, Deputy Sharon Sangster. The special prosecutor out of Shelby County says he is used to high profile cases. “We address them of course in Memphis and Shelby County with the numerous media outlets,” said Assistant District Attorney General Marques Young. The trial is expected to last three days. The judge admits jury selection could take longer than usual. The district attorney‘s office says they will be prepared. “We handle from the lowest person to the highest profile person, so we’re ready to go forward,” said Young. Donahoe said at this point, the state has not made a plea offer. “He’s certainly ready for this to come to trial,” said Donahoe. “He’s ready for it to be presented, ready for our side to be presented for a change.” Woolfork and his attorney have until April 18 to reach a plea agreement with the state. The judge also set several conditions for Woolfork‘s bond. He cannot have contact with Sangster in any way and cannot drink alcohol in excess. However, the judge dropped the provision that kept him from having guns.
