Power Crews Still Working to Restore Power

BELLS, Tenn– For the first time in a day and a half, the houses of some neighborhoods now have power. With the ice and sleet that came in Sunday night, crews began working to restore the damage. Residents like Joe Dixson said he and his wife had to survive with what they had. “We have gas logs in the fireplace, so that’s how we got by. We got battery lanterns and flash lights,” says Dixson. Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Company is the utility provider for the area. Vice President Phillip Mullins says storms like this bring a lot of obstacles for all electric companies. He says ice storms are a difficult challenge for utility companies because they touch every component of the system. Of the 12,000 customers they serve, more than half of those were without power. In 2 days, crews have restored power to almost all of them, but there are a few still waiting. Mullins says that with storms like this one, they’re forced to react to whatever mother nature hands them, and they’re extremely hard to predict.
