SOUTH JACKSON — The Jackson Fire Department recognized 19 of their firefighters who completed 280 hours of urban search and rescue training to better prepare for the threat of tornadoes, Monday morning. They started the training following the tornado that tore through Union University in 2008. The tornado helped the fire department identify areas they need to work on. “Not only do they take pride in what they’ve learned, but it also gives them a confidence to undertake when the time comes in an emergency situation,” JFD Chief Max Stewart said. It took these firefighters about five years to finish the training. If another tornado hits, the Jackson Fire Department is now recognized as a regional response team.
