PARIS, Tenn. — The first year of the “Outrun the Law 5K” was put on by the Paris Lions Club and the sheriff’s office, at Henry County High School where the runners were chased by law enforcement officers. “We’ve got a lot of professional runners out here they’re gonna do well today,” Sheriff Monte Belew said. “We’re gonna try to keep up with them and have a good showing at least But I think we’re gonna be outrun today.” Anyone who finished before the deputies got a special coin and those who didn’t, well, Sheriff Belew says they won too. The sheriff’s predictions proved to be right. Netherlands native and Paris resident Gideon Gielis was the first man to finish, leaving Sheriff Belew and his deputies in the dust. “They set themselves up in the back so I guess they wanted to save from embarrassment,” Gielis said. The Paris Lions Club says so far they’ve raised close to $2,000. All of the cash they say will go towards scholarships for Henry County High School seniors. The Lions Club says this is one of many fundraisers they plan to have throughout the year. Gielis says he’s hoping to do this again. “That’s the best, that’s the best, they can do this more often,” Gielis said. “Maybe on a longer distance too.” The club told us they plan to make this an annual event. There were 50 people who participated in the race.
