Inmate Formally Charged for Attacking Correctional Officer

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — The inmate accused of attacking a correctional officer was officially charged with assault, Thursday morning. Tray D. Chaney appeared in court to be arraigned on charges of Simple Assault. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for March 27 at 1:00. His bond was set at $50,000 for this incident. On Tuesday, police say Chaney struck Correctional Officer Daniel Birdwell, 27, in the face several times. Officer Birdwell was transported to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital where he was treated and released. Chaney is currently awaiting trial on charges of First Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon During a Deadly Felony and Felony Evading Arrest.
