New App Reminds Flood Victims of Tragedy

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Some West Tennesseans are remembering the 2010 flood that swallowed a Madison County neighborhood. Now, some are using a new smartphone app to help them in case a flood strikes again. All you have to do is touch, swipe and read the new Red Cross App that helps users prepare for a flood. The app has residents on McGee Loop in Madison County remembering their experience with gushing water. “My wife woke up screaming there’s water in the house,” Brandon Fause has lived on McGee Loop for 8 years. He said the 2010 flood consumed his neighborhood. The water rose quickly and did not give his family time to prepare. “When I first came out, I was just in complete shock cause it looked like a lake house,” Fause said. He said the Red Cross’ new flood app has inspired him to get ahead of the game. “Just be aware, you know? I’m more up to date on the weather as far as what’s going on, the patterns. If it started getting bad, I do have a plan,” he added. The app not only shows users what to do to prepare once a watch or warning has been issued, but it even lets them know what to do during a flood. It even features a flashlight. Connie Bausman, another resident on the street, wishes the app was available to everyone. “It would be wonderful for those who could afford it. But you know those things are expensive, those smartphones,” Bausman said. She said since the flood, her house has never been the same and she now lives in fear it will happen again. “Here a while back, water got up here in the yard and all we could think was ‘oh my goodness, are we going to go through it again?’,'” Bausman said. Some residents said they will use the new app to make sure their families are safe the next time disaster strikes. Many of those residents said they are still redoing floors and other parts of their homes nearly four years later. The app also has quizzes to test the user’s knowledge of how to prepare for a flood. You can download the app on iTunes on Apple devices or on Google Play for Androids.
