Horses Quarantined in McNairy County

MCNAIRY COUNTY, Tenn. — A warning for horse owners in West Tennessee. Two areas in McNairy County have been quarantined by the state Veterinarian’s Office as six cases of equine infectious anemia in horses are investigated. The exact locations of the quarantines have not been released. According to the UT Ag officials, there is no vaccination or cure for the disease, which only affects horses. Local veterinarians said the state takes equine infectious anemia, also called Coggins, very seriously. Two separate tests are run by the State Veterinarian’s Office. “If the horse tests positive the second time, it either has to be euthanized on the premises, euthanized, slaughtered or has to be quarantined 200 yards from any other horses,” said Dr. Ellen Deming. According to Dr. Deming, horses can get equine infectious anemia from contaminated needles or insects.
