Nearly 40 Pounds of Marijuana Mailed to West Tennessee Home

HENRY COUNTY, Tenn. – Henry County deputies said it is the biggest drug bust they have seen in at least a decade. Investigators found more than $40,000 worth of marijuana inside a packaged mailed to a West Tennessee home. Authorities said they got a tip about the drug delivery, Friday. Based on that tip two K-9s were brought in to sniff the suspected package, which was at the McKenzie Post Office. “We started surveilling it after the dogs alerted on it. We had officers follow it to the house, had surveillance teams set up on the house,” Sergeant Rick Watson, with Paris Police Department said. They then executed a search warrant and took Tomika Wharton, Stephen Porter and Quocus Gilliam into custody. According to deputies, all three face charges of possession of marijuana with intent to sell and unlawful drug paraphernalia. “A search of the house revealed the package the canines alerted on contained 39.5 pounds of marijuana,” Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew said. Each marijuana brick weighed about one pound and is worth about a thousand dollars, meaning the whole stack is worth about $40,000. “It did have some sort of masking agent on them as well. Whether it was kerosene or diesel fuel or oil, it had some kind of making agent to cover up the smell,” Sgt. Watson said. Authorities said they may not have found the drugs without the help of their K-9s. “There’s a chance we would have but it would’ve made it a lot harder to. We utilize them on a daily basis, they’re invaluable,” Sgt. Watson added. The three suspects are being held in the Henry County Correctional Facility. Each currently has a $100,000 bond. They will each make their first court appearance on Tuesday, March 25.
