EAST JACKSON — Police are investigating a shooting on Friday afternoon, that sent one man to the hospital and locked down 3 Jackson Madison County Schools. According to Capt. Tyreece Miller with JPD, a man was shot one time right outside of Lane Express Mart at 1 p.m.. The victim, a 24-year-old man, has non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital by personal vehicle. He is now recovering at home. Captain Miller said hopefully the victim can help identify the person who shot him. “I think there are certain groups of people that don’t like each other and any time their paths cross, whether its day or night, there’s a potential there for violence,” Capt. Miller said. After two shootings now in less than a week, the first on Monday in which Gary Morris was shot and killed on Brianfield Cove, Capt. Miller said the department’s priority is to the stop the gun violence. “We don’t know what’s in the air but we certainly are going to try to figure it out and we have increased our patrols to put an end to it,” he said. Capt. Miller said it takes just one person to speak up to help put this violence to an end. “There is a citizen or citizens who could possibly hold the key to stop some of this, because I think if we make an arrest, it will certainly at least calm it down if not stop it,” Capt. Miller said. Police are searching for a vehicle of interest. A newer model silver or champagne-colored Chevrolet Tahoe was in the area of Lane Express Mart immediately after the shooting. It was last seen traveling west on Lane Avenue. Dr. Michael Booker, principal of nearby school Jackson Central-Merry, confirmed that the school was on temporary lockdown due to the shooting. According to Ginger Carver, the PR specialist with JMCSS, Madison Academic Magnet High School and Alexander Elementary were also placed on lockdown for a brief period. All three schools have been released from lockdown after receiving confirmation from the Jackson Police Department that the suspects are no longer in the area.
