Town Raises Money For Firefighter After Blaze Destroys His Home

SHARON, Tenn. — For most residents in Sharon, helping their Assistant Fire Chief Mike Beal, comes as second nature. Something the assistant chief’s wife Deena Beal says, is breathtaking. “You may think you’re just giving a few bucks to help some one out, but then when all that comes together it’s just overwhelming,” Deena Beal said. Officials say a space heater destroyed the Beal’s family home in early April. Saturday morning Sharon firefighters were up early throwing chicken and burgers on the grill for a fundraiser. “It’s bad when any house burns but when your own guys…it hits home real hard and we’re just showing true brotherhood of a fire department,” Brent Cantrell said, Captain of the Sharon Fire Department. Deena Beal says thanks to the community the family is slowly rebuilding their lives in their new home. “People we don’t even know their name, just might see in passing and they’re coming up and offering support financially, emotionally,” Deena Beal said. Mike Beal, known for raising money for fire victims, leaves a lasting impression on people in the town, especially Otis Crayton, a close friend of the assistant chief. “If he can help you in any way he can, he will,” Crayton said. “If you need him for anything he’s there.” The town also held a community wide yard sale and raffled off a lawn mower for the family. Firefighters say they’ve served more than 700 plates and hope to raise more than $7,000.
